The East Greenwich, NJ Crawfish

East Greenwich CrayfishI am not sure how long these guys have been here, but one thing is for sure; They seem to be doing VERY well.

When we first moved to Mickelton, NJ (East Greenwich Twp), we soon took notice of the large lobster-like creatures swimming below the bridge. I'd have to say we were all rather amazed at their size.

From my fishing days when I was younger, I remember crayfish/crawfish being much smaller. These ones must have been feasting on the "Best in the world Jersey Tomatoes"!

Crayfish in East Greenwich, South JerseyThis isn't the first time we have seen these guys, but the pictures here are from outside the front of our house, in a development, in the street. This guy either crawled up from the sewer or he walked a really long way from the nearest water!

I'll be putting him back in a safe spot. Maybe he will return in the spring.

My kids love catching these we call them "Crawdads"  Our favorite spot is up at Strawberry Lake and the kids tie a chick let to some string drop it in the lake and wait for them to bite.  The tricky part is having them hang on all the way to the pier where they net them and then have to pick them up and put them into the bucket.  There's always someone there who will pay the kids for their bucket of fresh crawdads.  I'll have to show them your pictures they'll love it

Kim - share away - post the pics below :) A chicklet? As in the gum? That is funny.

Don't see those around here, but boy, I don't want to dance with one!  LOL

Ah, brings back memories of being a kid doesn't it...We called them crawdads here, but they didn't quite look like the one you found.  Ours were just plain old brown in color...Your little friend looks a bit scary to me...But then again I was always too scared to mess with them, all I could ever muster up enough courage to catch were the minnows!  :)

Steve, I've lived in South Jersey my entire life, but I've never seen one of those.........creepy!

LOL! That's funny that they just wander around and make themselves at home wherever they want.  And holy moly! That sucker is big!

Chris - Me too - I lived here my whole life and same. They really aren't creepy though. They are pretty cool. This one was very slow. I think due to the cold weather.

Lisa - I have to admit, I wonder how tasty they are ;)

I am with Chris in the "Creepy" department yet wonder what they taste like.  I just want to see the "meat" if I am eating them!

These guys are huge Steve! Very cool action shots too, looks like they were posing for you.

On another note, your photoshop graphic about featured posts on TLW's blog was pretty darn witty, loved it ;o)
